How to find hidden and unlisted products on a Shopify store
6 min read
Stores don't link every product from their menus. Some are published but left out of collections and navigation - early-access drops, wholesale items, test products, landing-page exclusives - and those you can surface from public data. But be precise: Shopify also has an official 'Unlisted' product status that hides items from every public feed, which no public method can list. Here's how to find the first kind, and exactly where the line is.
First, three kinds of 'hidden' (this matters)
Shopify products can be hidden in three different ways, and only one is findable from public data. Getting this right is the difference between accurate research and chasing ghosts:
- Not linked in the storefront - published and present in products.json, just not in any menu or collection. These you CAN find (the methods below).
- Set to Shopify's official 'Unlisted' status - Shopify deliberately removes these from products.json, the sitemap, storefront search, collections and the Shopify Catalog. They're reachable only by their direct product URL. No public enumeration method can list them.
- Draft or unpublished - not live on the storefront at all, completely private to the owner. Invisible by any method.
Method 1: products.json shows unlinked products
The public products.json feed lists published products regardless of whether they're in a collection or menu. So comparing products.json against what's actually linked on the site reveals the unlisted ones:
https://examplestore.com/products.json?limit=250
Method 2: The product sitemap
Shopify auto-generates a sitemap for SEO that links to product sitemaps listing every published product URL - including unlisted ones. Start at the sitemap index and follow the product sitemaps:
https://examplestore.com/sitemap.xml # -> links to sitemap_products_1.xml, sitemap_products_2.xml, ...
Method 3: Compare the catalog to the collections
For a systematic view: pull the full catalog from /products.json, then pull each collection's products from /collections/{handle}/products.json. Any product in the full catalog that isn't in any collection is effectively hidden from browsing - often the most interesting items (exclusives, bundles, or products they're quietly testing).
Why unlisted products are worth watching
Unlisted products are frequently where a competitor tests ideas before a public launch, runs quiet promotions, or stages an upcoming drop. Spotting a new unlisted product can be an early signal of where they're heading - before it's announced.
Catch them automatically
Manually diffing products.json against collections for every competitor isn't realistic to do often. Shop Sentry watches the full catalog from products.json - including unlisted products - and alerts you the moment a new one appears or an existing one changes, so you catch quiet drops as they happen rather than stumbling on them later.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see a Shopify store's draft or unpublished products?
No. Draft and unpublished products aren't live on the storefront, so they're completely private to the owner - no public method can reveal them.
What about Shopify's official 'Unlisted' product status?
Those are hidden too. When a merchant sets a product to the 'Unlisted' status, Shopify strips it from products.json, the sitemap, storefront search and collections - it's reachable only by its direct URL. So public methods can't enumerate Unlisted products either; they only find products that are published but simply not linked in the navigation.
How do I find unlisted products?
Pull /products.json (which lists all published products, linked or not) and the sitemap, then compare against what's actually linked on the site. Products that appear in products.json but not in any collection or menu are unlisted.
Why would a store unlist a product?
Common reasons: early-access or landing-page exclusives, wholesale/B2B items, test products, or an upcoming drop they've published but not yet promoted.
Can a tool alert me when they add a hidden product?
Yes - Shop Sentry monitors the full products.json catalog (including unlisted products) and alerts you when a new one appears.
