How many products does a Shopify store have?

4 min read

Catalog size tells you a lot about a competitor - whether they're a focused brand or a sprawling dropshipper, and how fast they're adding products. You can find any public Shopify store's product count for free, in under a minute. Here are two quick ways.

Method 1: The product-count endpoint

Some Shopify stores expose a lightweight count directly. Try adding /products/count.json or using the count on the collection:

https://examplestore.com/collections/all/products/count.json
When available, this returns a simple {"count": N}. Not every store leaves it enabled, so if it 404s, use Method 2.

Method 2: Count from products.json (always works)

The reliable method is to page through the public catalog and add up the products. Request 250 at a time and keep going until a page returns an empty list - the total across all pages is the catalog size:

https://examplestore.com/products.json?limit=250&page=1 # count these
https://examplestore.com/products.json?limit=250&page=2 # add these
...until a page returns "products": []
A quick estimate: if page 1 (limit=250) is full and page 2 is partial, the store has between 251 and 500 products. For an exact number, add up every page.

A one-line way to count

If you're comfortable with a terminal, this paginates and prints the exact total:

python -c "import requests;s='https://examplestore.com';p=1;n=0
while True:
  d=requests.get(f'{s}/products.json',params={'limit':250,'page':p}).json()['products']
  if not d: break
  n+=len(d); p+=1
print('Total products:', n)"

Counting your own store

If it's your OWN store you want to count, it's easier. Your Shopify admin shows the total right on the Products page (with filters by status), and when you're logged in you can hit the admin product-count endpoint:

https://yourstore.myshopify.com/admin/products/count.json
The admin count includes drafts and archived products, which the public methods can't see - so your admin number may be higher than a public count of your live storefront.

What the count does and doesn't include

The number you get is the store's published products - what's live on the storefront. It does NOT include draft or unpublished products, or products hidden from all collections but still reachable (those can appear in products.json but not in a collection count). So treat it as 'published catalog size,' which is exactly what matters for competitor research.

Watch the number change over time

A single count is a snapshot. What's more revealing is the trend: a store adding 20 products a week is testing aggressively; one that's shrinking is pruning losers. Shop Sentry tracks a store's catalog continuously and alerts you to every new product and removal - so you see the catalog grow and shrink in real time, not just today's number.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count a Shopify store's products for free?

Page through /products.json?limit=250 (page=1, 2, 3...) and add up the products until a page comes back empty. Some stores also expose /collections/all/products/count.json for an instant number.

What's the maximum I can pull per request?

250 products per page. Larger catalogs need multiple page requests to count fully.

Does the count include hidden or draft products?

No - it's the published storefront catalog. Draft/unpublished products aren't public. Some products hidden from collections can still show in products.json though.

Can I track how the catalog size changes?

Yes - Shop Sentry monitors a store's catalog over time and alerts you to every new and removed product, so you can see it grow or shrink.
